♥ Skin 101 | Wonderful Winter Skin ♥
It’s that time of year again – we’re bulking up and dawning more and more, thicker threaded clothing. You’ve stocked up and popped those fancy tissues in your handbag for sneeze season, plus the onset of more rain, ice and even snow days are fast approaching! Welcome back to our wonderful Irish winter days!
If you’re a bride to be in the coming festive season or simply a bride wanting to be on top of her skincare regime for a spring wedding, then check out my top tips and product recommendations for optimum glowing skin for those creamy hot- chocolate, woolly jumper wearing, by the fire evenings, that are fast approaching!
Firstly some factors to consider!
♥ Environmental Factors ♥
With the onset of colder days, and the turning up of your heating systems your skins going to take a battering between cold weather and the warmth of your offices or homes. Dry skin is a skin type, just as oily skin is a type. A dry skin type is obvious as you’ll notice flaking skin but for most of us, its dehydration in our system which pulls the much-needed moisture from our skin to keep all our organs hydrated. So remember to up your water intake as you would in hot weather, and eat healthily. Other factors such as taking piping hot showers, using alcohol based cosmetic products, such as toners and facial wipes are a huge factor in stripping the skins natural oils and are a ‘NO NO’.
♥ Dehydration Test ♥
If you find your products aren’t doing the work they normally do eg moisturiser needs twice the amount than normal, then this is a sure sign your skin needs some TLC.
After you shower, leave your skin free of any products or exfoliation for a few minutes. Then lightly pinch your cheek and if your skin forms fine lines, then this is a clear sign of dehydration. You can try this on your forehead and other areas of the body also as a test.
Here’s a few tricks to now relieve dehydrated winter skin and have you glowing in your winter woollies!
♥ Exfoliate ♥
A simple trick, and also time saving is to exfoliation in the warmth and comfort of your shower. The steam will open up your pores and dead unwanted skin cells will easily wash away. This also gets your micro-circulation moving (all the tiny blood vessels under your skin), encouraging new cell growth! #Rejuvenation! Not only that but it will drain all those old toxins and nasties we don’t see, out of your skin leaving you glowing! Twice to 3 times a week is perfect! And one more for the road if you’ve been on the cocktails at the weekend!
♥ DIY Recommendation: Mix brown sugar and your cleanser or olive oil will ensure a beautiful natural yet effective exfoliation. Brown sugar is full of glycolic acid that will refine and remove dead skin cells leaving you glowing – plus it smells really great!

♥ How to Exfoliate: Use in small circular motions (avoiding your eye area) to remove unwanted dry skin!
♥ Moisturise & SPF ♥
So now you’re your skins like a newborn baby’s tiny backside, a much-needed hydration boost is required! Simply massage your favorite moisturizer for your skin type all over your face, neck and décolletage (shoulder/bosom area)! However, I do suggest changing up moisturizers for the winter months. We mostly we use a lighter textured moisturizer in Spring/Summer so you need to ‘up the anti’ on your hydration levels in winter by using a slightly more hydrating product, in-turn helps you avoid any pit-falls for dry scaling skin to appear! Not only that but you’ll find your moisturiser will soak right into your skin in record time after exfoliating. With that layer of old dead skin cells removed, you’re giving your moisturiser a direct playing field to do its best and most effective work!
Top Tip!!! Use an SPF daily! Purchase a moisturizer with an SPF no lower than 30 in winter to fight off those aging UVA/UVB rays we don’t see! And be sure to pop it on any areas of skin that are out in the elements (ahem don’t forget your hands)

Greek Yogurt and Honey makes a fabulous inexpensive DIY mask – this will not only hydrate (honey) but also gently and naturally exfoliates due to the lactic acid content of the yogurt. Mix with honey (no set amount) for a hydrating glow – pop all over face for 5/10 minutes and rinse off!

♥ HYDRATE AGAIN with Serums & Eye-creams ♥
Avoid popping your moisturiser onto the finer skin around the eye area – why? This area of skin is 40% less in thickness than that of the rest of our face, so thick moisturisers can cause puffiness in this fine slightly translucent area. Use an eye cream or serum devoted to this area in circular motions using your ring finger to drain and detox tired eyes! Using a facial serum all over will instil even more hydration to your face, neck and décolletage – yes, and this goes for all you oilier skin types too! FACT!

♥ Hands/Feet and Body ♥
Don’t forget it’s not only our beautiful faces that we need to keep on top of during the winter months. Our lovely bodies are now covered up more than ever, encouraging chaffing and drying out! Use a devoted body scrub or exfoliating gloves in your shower or bath to remove dried out skin. Then smother yourself in your favourite hydrating body butter to keep soft and subtle – I’m sure your groom-to-be will appreciate a soft subtle skin to cuddle up to on those cold winter nights!
Don’t forget!!! Pop a little hand moisturiser in your bag or on your desk at work and don’t forget those feet of yours! They need some attention too! A nice pedicure removing dead skin will have them feeling revived and fresh with a long winter of socks/tights and boots ahead!
